MEDIA Q & A

I really appreciate when people ask that question, because it is truly a story worth telling. It is a testament to the power of dreams… what Quick Stars is all about.
We couldn’t be more grassroots. We started with nothing—no building, no start up, no credentials, no funding, not even a business loan. Nothing but a dream. But I had faith the size of a mustard seed, which is all you need to move mountains.
In 2004, I put up small yellow note on the free bulletin board in front of Foodland. I took my first client at Border’s bookstore in Waikele and tutored there for a few months. My aunty then let me use her basement as an office for about a year.
After that, I moved Quick Stars to my childhood home in Waipio and operated out of a small 100 square foot bedroom. I had a handful of students. Moving to commercial in 2015 was huge; at that time we had approximately 40 students. In 2018, we got a lease for a larger office space in the same building in Waipio.
Currently, we average about 140 students coming in weekly, with 18 incredible tutors. In January 2024, we celebrated 20 years and opened our second location in Honolulu!
I appreciate any company out there that exists to help children, as there are many excellent tutoring centers in Hawai’i. What I believe makes us special is the way we started, being a small locally owned company, and not a national franchise. We have the opportunity to give that personal touch, which clients really appreciate.
Our tutors are hand-picked. They have extensive educational and professional backgrounds, but more importantly, they are genuine people who care about their students and go above and beyond to help them succeed. The one-on-one sessions with our tutors is crucial.
We are a true local style company, from taking shoes off at door to talking story parents after the session. We exude the spirit of aloha that we all know makes Hawai’i so strong.

Yes! We are very grateful—to A & B for the opportunity to have a premier location in the community in which I grew up. It’s such a warm and small town feel in Waipio. I am so grateful for our clients—the best clients I could ask for. I am beyond thankful for our incredible staff who makes Quick Stars what we are. Last but not least, I am forever grateful to my family for their support.

I truly believe in the 80/20 rule. We rely on 20% academic teaching and book knowledge, which is definitely necessary. But why our students succeed and we have 100% five-star reviews on Yelp is because of the 80% aloha. It’s the warmth the tutors have—the connection and rapport with their students. We truly believe in them, when they may not believe in themselves. That’s what motivates them to learn—not only in the classroom but as lifelong learners, with good attitudes and character. All because we believe in them. Never underestimate the power of a dream!
